The Academy of Young Scholars reaches many more students, and at a younger age, than the Scholar Support Program. The Academy was started in 2006 with 30 students at one high school. The following year it expanded to serve a total of three high schools in the Pomona Unified School District. The Academy has grown to serve nearly 500 students and is discernibly transforming the campus culture at those schools; hundreds of students know early on that college is affordable and that it is within their power to prepare themselves to qualify for admission. Due to the Academy’s peer support culture, each class expands throughout the course of the year as members bring their friends around. The Academy program will now expand to serve two additional schools: Montclair and Ontario High Schools. Students from those schools will join their counterparts from Pomona at the week-long Summer Academy for Rising High School Sophomores, to be held at Harvey Mudd College this August.
